Annotated bibliographies are used to assist in research and writing by forcing you to consider the sources you are selecting for your research. Annotated bibliographies contain two parts: the bibliography and the annotation. Bibliographies are a list of sources you intend to use cited using the required citation style for your discipline. Below each citation you include the annotation, a short paragraph covering various topics regarding that specific source. Though annotations can vary wildly depending on need, instructor requirements, etc., they typically have these elements: a summary of the source and the research it presents; an evaluation of that source and how it fits into the general scholarly discussion; and a statement of purpose on how it fits into your research.
